Cougars Volleyball Welcomes First Recruit!

Cougars Volleyball Welcomes First Recruit!

Sault College Cougars Head Coach Becky Grisdale was grinning ear to ear as the Cougars put pen to paper on their first official signing for the 2025-26 OCAA volleyball season.

Liz Gavey, a Sault Ste. Marie, ON player made her decision official on Wednesday night as she officially signed with the Cougars Volleyball program. Currently a middle/outside hitter for the Steel City Ignite Inferno, Liz will be instrumental in building the Cougars program.

“A local powerhouse at the net, Liz has been dominating on the court and we can’t wait to see her bring that same energy and skill to our inaugural season. As the first athlete to sign with our new program, Liz is helping lay the foundation for an exciting future for Sault College volleyball!” Added Grisdale, “Welcome to the team, Liz! We’re ready for you to make a big impact!”

Competitive athletics are in Liz’s blood growing up in an athletic family, the daughter of ex-NHLer Aaron Gavey. The signing day for Gavey comes off the heels of her first OVA tournament of the season in which she helped the Inferno win their first OVA Gold Medal of the season.

Gavey began her volleyball career at ST. Mary’s College in Sault Ste. Marie during grade 10. “I taught myself the basics in high school, and it’s just grown from there,” said Gavey. I’m really excited to continue playing!”

For Gavey, Sault College wasn’t the only option for collegiate volleyball but felt it was the best choice, “A few other schools were speaking with me, but the opportunity to be a part of Sault College and help build a brand new program in my hometown couldn’t be matched.”

Cougars Volleyball will begin their inaugural season during the 2025-26 school year. Stay tuned for updates about future signings and upcoming schedule as we prepare for OCAA league play.
