
[SooToday.com - Brad Coccimiglio] - A quick start lifted the Sault College women’s hockey team to a national title on Tuesday.
Competing at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II National Championship in St. Louis, Sault College beat Assiniboine 6-2 to capture their third consecutive national title.
Sault College jumped out to a 4-1 lead through 20 minutes.
Emma Lee opened the scoring 3:30 into the game before Assiniboine’s Madison Haliuk tied the game at one just over four minutes later.
Materia Land put Sault College ahead with a natural hat trick to make it a 4-1 game.
Land gave Sault College a 2-1 lead 46 seconds after Assiniboine had tied the game, and then scored with 2:08 to go in the frame before adding her third goal of the period with a power play marker.
The power play goal came with 28 seconds to go in the period.
Sault College took a 5-1 lead early in the second period as Payton Stos scored 5:27 into the frame.
While on the power play midway through the period, Brooklyn Franklin scored for Assiniboine to cut the Sault College lead back to three goals at 10:21.
Emily Moore capped off the scoring with 2:49 to go for Sault College with an empty net goal.
Farrah Farstad made 27 saves for Sault College in the win, while Payton Murray made 33 saves for Assiniboine. Farstad was named tournament MVP after recording three straight shutouts en route to the championship game.
Sault College earned a berth in the national title game after a semifinal win on Monday over Wisconsin.
Annika Babineau had two goals and an assist in the 5-0 win while Farstad stopped 21 shots for the shutout.
Assiniboine beat Navy 2-1 in the other semifinal game on Monday.
